The Mustard Seed Players is the theatre group at Perry United Methodist Church. The group sprouted in 2000 when a group of Perry United Methodist theatre wannabes decided to present a choral presentation of some songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Blocking was added, and actors read from their scripts on stage, because no one wanted to memorize lines. No matter, we'd been bitten by the theatre bug, and Martha DiLorenzo volunteered to write and direct an original musical based on the story of Ruth, called Wherever You Go, in 2001. It featured a drummer, piano, and trumpets. The play was a huge success, and for the first time, actors actually memorized their lines, (though ingenious cheat sheets were the rage!) In 2002, the Perry United Methodist Christian Theatre Group presented Godspell by Steven Schwartz, our first "published" play, complete with choreography, and props a la Pam Thompson and Bonnie Kish. The bar was raised, as new actors joined us, and we became more comfortable on stage. In the fall of 2002, we presented our first dinner theatre, an original production called O What A Night. This was our first "joint effort" script, written by a small group. The group also decided to change our name to the Mustard Seed Players. Spring 2003 brought another original musical production by Pat Betteley, For Such a Time as This, the story of Esther. Peggy Burkholder donated two weeks worth of time and materials to help us make fabulous costumes. Alan and Ron Burkholder constructed stage lights, and creative, new members joined us. This brings us to our sixth Mustard Seed production, Earl and Edgell's Complete Brief History of the Old Testy-mint. Written by committee, this show featured two of our favorite characters developed by Brad Ashburn and Mike Breeze over the years. In the spring of 2004, the Mustard Seed Players presented our seventh production In the Belly of the Whale, the story of Jonah, written and directed by Martha DiLorenzo. It was a lot of fun and a big success! In the spring of 2005, the group went back to their beginning and again presented Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat only this time with their parts memorized and much more blocking and acting! |
