The History
of Perry United Methodist Church
Our ties to the past are many. Religion was
one of life's necessities. The isolated settler looked forward to the
visit of the wandering, circuit-riding ministers.
The early settlers of Perry were hardy, honest, religious and
progressive. The first settler was Ezra Beebe, and he settled in Perry
prior to 1810, along the river. Mrs. Ezra Beebe was among the early
Methodists in Perry. The first Methodist meetings were held in 1815 -
prayer meetings held in a log schoolhouse on River Road. Solomon Cone
organized these prayer meetings.
Perry UMC was organized in 1818. It was part of the Grand River Circuit
and was served by Rev. Ira Eddy. In 1844 the South Perry Church was
constructed on land donated by Charles Wright located on the northeast
corner of South Ridge and Lane Roads. In 1916 it was moved to the
southwest corner and became a residence. It is still a residence today.
Two years after the construction of the South Perry Church, in 1846,
North Perry Church was built on the northeast corner of Middle Ridge
and Call Roads on land donated by Marcus Winchester. North Perry Chapel
was moved across fields by horse and logs in 1896 to where it presently
stands, as our Chapel. The present church building was built in 1872 on
land donated by Morgan Crosby. It was dedicated on Feb. 11, 1873. South
Perry Church, North Perry Chapel Church and the Center Church merged in
1882. In 1914 the church was wired for electricity and lights were
installed.
The first parsonage, next to the Chapel, was built in 1871. The present
parsonage was built in 1960 and purchased by the church in 1970.
